Everyone who uses the Internet, or an Xbox or PS3, or a Smartphone, should read “The Machine Stops” by E. M Forster. Written in 1909 he seems to be blessed, or cursed depending on point of view, with a vision of a dystopia disguised as Utiopia. Those of you playing Farmville or posting on Facebook or updating your blogs and tweeting your latest meal should all stop for a few moments, read this story, this vision of what may yet be. Then you should all go outside and either shiver in the cold or sweat in the heat, and give thanks that you live in a world where the wonder of the world is still attainable by the simple expedient of opening a door and experiencing it.
Do it now. Go out. Breathe. Feel your muscles move. Touch the earth with your naked fingers and rejoice that you are able to do so.
The Irony that I am exhorting you to do these things from my blog post does not escape me.
You must excuse me now.
I am going out for a walk.
